New York's College Team was a main attraction on Saturday. The Orange football team battled USC in New York's College Classic before a national television audience of more than 4.7 million viewers. The 3.3 rating was the second highest of all college football broadcasts last Saturday. Florida and Texas A&M received a higher rating (3.4) but had fewer viewers (4.5 million).
The impact of New York's College Classic's has been felt in many ways, including strengthening Syracuse University's brand in the New York Metropolitan, Orange football recruiting and the opportunity for family and friends of SU student-athletes to watch in person closer to their home. The Syracuse roster features 26 student-athletes from the New York metro area.
"The response we have had from recruits has been outstanding," said Orange head coach Doug Marrone. "They have said, 'Hey, this was a great venue, we see you guys coming, this looks like a program that I would like to be part of.' Then the next thing is, ''Coach, if I come are we going to play teams like that?' We are and I have said that all along. Even though we were extremely disappointed in the outcome of the game, when you turn it around and look from a recruiting standpoint, we are extremely excited about how many people watched that game. That is really important for us because we need to continue to bring in better talent."
Syracuse returns to the gridiron this Saturday at 4 p.m. when it hosts Stony Brook at the Carrier Dome (TWCS/SNY). Season and individual game tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
All children under the age of 12 are welcome to come to the game for free, sponsored by Time Warner Cable. The first 10,000 fans in the building will receive a limited edition New York's College Team bracelet.
