Gotham Classic Pairings Announced

The announcement of the pairings in the 2012 Gotham Classic completes the men's basketball schedule for Syracuse. The Orange will host Canisius (Dec. 15), Detroit (Dec. 17) and Alcorn State (Dec. 29) in the Carrier Dome and play Temple (Dec. 22) in Madison Square Garden as part of the event.
Syracuse is coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Orange won a school-record 34 games, were 34-3 overall, and won the BIG EAST Conference regular-season title with a 17-1 league record. Syracuse reached the NCAA Tournament's "Elite Eight," before losing to Ohio State.
Canisius enters its first season with Jim Baron as its head coach. The former standout performer at St. Bonaventure and then head coach at his alma mater, Baron also served as head coach at Rhode Island before his hiring at Canisius. Baron takes over a club that struggled through a 5-25 season a year ago. Syracuse leads the all-time series with Canisius, 45-24.
Detroit was 22-14 a year ago. The Titans won the Horizon League tournament and earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Detroit lost to Kansas, 65-50, in its NCAA opener. Ray McCallum enters his fifth season as head coach at Detroit. Syracuse has won four of five meetings with the Titans.
Alcorn State and Syracuse met once previously – a 1982-83 encounter won by the Orange in the Carrier Classic. The Braves were 10-22 a season ago, a six-win improvement over the previous campaign for Coach Luther Riley's team.
