#2 Orange Tops Villanova in BIG EAST Opener, 5-2

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Lauren Brooks and Leonie Geyer scored two goals each as No. 2 Syracuse (6-0, 1-0) defeated Villanova (4-3, 0-1) in the BIG EAST field hockey opener on Friday at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
Senior captain Kelsey Millman also scored for the Orange as it ran its home winning streak to 31 games and improved to 6-0 for the fourth time in program history. Syracuse used an 18-2 shot advantage and 6-1 edge in penalty corners to take a commanding 4-0 lead at halftime before finishing the game up 32-6 in shots and 11-3 in corners.
Liz McInerney tallied two assists on the day for SU, while Jordan Page and Emma Russell also added helpers of their own.
Leann Stiver played the first 51:49 in goal for the Orange to record her sixth straight win of the season and 49th of the senior's career. Freshman Jess Jecko played the final 18:11, recording one save and allowing one goal.
Villanova's Alex Diekmann made 14 stops in net, while Leah High and Jessica Swoboda scored second-half goals for the Wildcats.
Brooks started the scoring in the 11th minute when she knocked in a rebound at close range for her fourth of the season. The Orange then scored three goals in a less than four-minute span between the 29th and 33rd minutes off the sticks of Geyer, Millman and Brooks, her team-leading fifth of the season, making it 4-0 at halftime.
Villanova got on the board 1:09 into the second period when High took a pass from Swoboda and scored the first goal allowed by Syracuse at home this season.
Geyer came back with her second of the game and third of the season off a penalty corner in the 48th minute off assists from Page and McInerney, making it 5-1.
Swoboda closed the scoring in the 61st minute on the tip-in of a long lead pass from outside the circle.
Syracuse's 31-game home winning streak dates back to 2009 and it has outscored the opposition, 133-24, during the streak.
The Orange closes the home weekend by hosting Kent State at Coyne Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.
