Ever wonder what it's like to make a 61-yard run to score a touchdown and give your football team momentum?
Â
Junior running back Prince-Tyson Gulley can tell you.
Â
"I just caught the ball and looked up field," Gulley said, describing his 61-yard touchdown against Stony Brook. "I saw that I had some good blocks. I just took off. I never looked back. It was the perfect play. Everything happened like it needed to happen. I didn't really have to do a lot. I just ran. It kind of got the team up. We tried to build momentum from there."
Â
Gulley's touchdown gave the offense the momentum it needed to earn its first win of the season against Stony Brook, 28-17, on Saturday. The Orange were down at halftime to the Seawolves, 17-14, but rallied in the second half to secure a victory. SU has shown in all three games so far this season that it is able to make adjustments at halftime by scoring 68 of its 98 points in the second half.
Â
"We went into the locker room and Coach Marrone came in real calm," Gulley said. "He told us to just go out there and play. He didn't really want to yell at us. He didn't have a lot to say. He just said, let's go play like we know how to play. We went out there and controlled the second half."
Â
Another aspect of the SU game plan that has helped the team be so efficient in the second half of play is its new style of offense that includes no huddle and hurry-up qualities.
Â
"I think it has a lot to do with wearing down the defenses," Gulley said. "In past years, we have always sat back and watched fronts to see what they're doing. Now this year, we just attack and I think that works better for all of us. That's the mentality that this team has."
Â
The Orange are now preparing for its trip to Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 22nd, to face the Golden Gophers at 8 p.m. (BTN).
Â
"Watching film, I expect them to come hard as a Big Ten opponent," Gulley said. "We just need to come out ready to play. We need to up the intensity. We need to try to wear them out as fast as we can and beat them on their home field."
Â
SU will have a bye weekend on Sept. 29th and return home on Friday Oct. 5th to open up BIG EAST play against Pittsburgh (7 p.m., ESPN). Tickets are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
