Senior quarterback Ryan Nassib has proven to be a leader both on and off the field. The third-year starter is a semifinalist for the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award presented by Fidelity Investments for his efforts in excelling in the classroom, climbing through the SU record book and staying involved in community service. The NFF Awards Committee will select up to 16 honorees with each receiving an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.
"I think Ryan's preparation for this season all started back in January when the season was over," said head coach Doug Marrone. "I think he has done an outstanding job for someone who has worked really hard, not just on his game but also on the leadership of the team and the leadership of the offense."
Nassib's 1,367 total yards (341.8 yards per game) puts him at second in the nation and number one in the BIG EAST. He currently ranks seventh nationally and leads the BIG EAST in total offense (360.0 yards/game). The West Chester, Pa. native set the SU all-time completions record in the beginning of the season and currently has 615 career completions. He has thrown 54 career touchdown passes which ranks second in SU history which is the most among current BIG EAST quarterbacks. In 2011, Nassib set several season program records, including the single season record for completions (259) and passing yards (2,685).
Nassib is also one of 21 quarterbacks to be named to the Senior Bowl Watch List and is a candidate for the 2012 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, a prestigious award given to the top quarterback in the country. Vote for Nassib in the Davey O'Brien Fan Vote by clicking here.
Nassib graduated in May from the Martin J. Whitman School of Management in May with an undergraduate degree in finance and is currently pursuing his Master's degree in accounting. He was a 2012 ESPN Academic All-District Team selection is also a four-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree. Nassib was a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and the Whitman School of Management Dean's List from 2008-11.
While not out on the practice field or working on school work, Nassib also finds time to volunteer within his community. Nassib has served on the SU Football Team Leadership Council since 2009 and has interned each summer with an investment broker. He also volunteers at the Onondaga County Justice Center as well as the Salvation Army and Benderson Ida Senior Center.
