
Blue Demons Edge Orange In Four-Setter

CHICAGO, Ill. – After capturing a win in the second set to tie the match at 1-1, the Orange volleyball squad (8-9, 0-2 BIG EAST) lost the remaining two sets, handing DePaul (6-10, 1-2 BIG EAST) their first BIG EAST win of the season on Saturday afternoon at the McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Despite falling to the Blue Demons 21-25 in the first set, SU rallied in the second set, which featured 16 tie scores and five lead changes, leading up to the final tie of the set at 29-29. A kill by Silvi Uattara and an attacking error on DePaul's Rachel Aumann tied the match at 1-1 heading into the third set.
The Orange could not hold off the Blue Demon trio of Abbie Fleener, Vesela Zapryanova and Rachel Autmann though, as DePaul took the third and fourth sets to end the match. Fleener led the trio with 21 kills, while Zapryanova and Autmann added 10 and 15 kills, respectively.
Uattara led the SU offensive attack with 12 kills, while Andrea Fisher added ten kills. Setter Emily Betteridge and Gosia Wlaszczuk combined for 42 assists, while Samantha Hinz led the team at the net with four blocks. Uattara added three total blocks, including one solo block.
Syracuse will return home to the Women's Building to face two more BIG EAST opponents next weekend. The Orange will host USF at 12 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 and Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7.
