NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Syracuse Orange volleyball team (8-10, 0-3 BIG EAST) was swept by Notre Dame (10-6, 3-1 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon (13-25, 19-25, 22-25) at the Purcell Pavilion.
Despite dropping the first two sets to the Fighting Irish, the Orange opened up the third set with a 2-0 lead. As Syracuse continued to contend with Notre Dame, the Orange found an offensive rhythm with a 7-2 spurt to take a five-point lead heading into a timeout at 17-12.
After the break, the Orange began to lose momentum, as a block by Notre Dame's Hilary Eppink and Maggie Brindock sliced the Syracuse lead to two points heading into the first Syracuse timeout of the set.
Following the SU timeout, Notre Dame took advantage of two Orange attacking errors, posting five kills to narrowly win the the third set 25-22, taking the match 3-0.
BIG EAST Player of the Week, Toni Alugbue and Jeni Houser led the Fighting Irish offensive attack with 12 kills apiece, while Maggie Brindock dished out 39 assists.
Samantha Clarey had a team high 10 kills for the Orange, while Monika Salkute totaled a match-high three blocks, including one solo block. Emily Betteridge dished out 32 assists.
Syracuse will be back in action next weekend in the Women's Building, taking on USF at 12 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2 before closing out the weekend against Pittsburgh on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m.
