SYRACUSE, N.Y. - No. 1 Syracuse field hockey (11-0) scored five first-half goals to cruise to its fourth shutout victory in a row, 5-0, vs. Yale (3-5) on a rainy Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
The Orange's Irish trio of Liz McInerney, Gillian Pinder and Emma Russell combined to score the first four goals, with Pinder tallying two, while Jordan Page closed the scoring as Syracuse won its 34th-straight game on its home turf.
Pinder, a freshman from Dublin, finished with two goals and an assist, while McInerney, a graduate student from Dublin, had a goal and two assists.
Leann Stiver picked up the shutout in goal, her career-high seventh of the season and 19th of her career, and ran her streak to 311 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal, dating back to Sept. 16 vs. Kent State.
The Orange controlled play from start to finish, outshooting the Bulldogs, 28-2, and out-cornering them, 13-1.
McInerney had a hand in the Orange's first three goals, assisting on Russell's sixth of the season in the ninth minute and Pinder's first of two on the day in the 12th minute, before scoring one of her own, her fourth of the season, in the 15th minute off assists by Alyssa Manley and Pinder.
Pinder tallied her second of the day and fifth of the season in the 17th minute off a Lauren Brooks assist, giving the freshman a career-high five points on the day.
Page's fifth goal of the season came unassisted in the 28th minute. That would close the scoring as the teams held each other without a goal in the second half as the rain intensified and field conditions became slower.
Emily Cain and Heather Schlesier each made four saves in one half each in goal for the Bulldogs.
Syracuse is 11-0 for the second time in program history. In 2008, it started 14-0 on its way to a Final Four appearance.
The Orange has shut out four opponents in a row for the first time since 2000.
The top-ranked Orange returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Providence for a BIG EAST contest at noon.
