PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Leonie Geyer, Kelsey Millman and Stephanie Hussey scored a goal each and Leann Stiver recorded her fifth straight shutout in goal to lead No. 1 Syracuse field hockey (12-0, 4-0 BIG EAST) to a 3-0 win at Providence (5-6, 1-1 BIG EAST) at Lennon Family Field on Saturday.
Stiver made six saves to run her consecutive shutout minutes streak to 381, dating back to Sept. 16 vs. Kent State. The senior leads the nation in both goals against average (0.44) and save percentage (.875). The five shutouts in a row are tied for the second longest streak in program history. Syracuse had six straight to start the 1997 season.
"We played a very good first half and had some nice combination plays," head coach Ange Bradley said. "We then managed the game in the second half. Providence is an aggressive team that always plays tough and their goalie made some really good saves."
Millman, the Orange's senior captain, played a hand in both of Syracuse's first-half goals, assisting on the first and scoring the second, as the nation's top-ranked team took control early.
Geyer started things off with the midfielder's seventh goal of the season, sending a shot home off a penalty corner in the 10th minute off the Millman push-out and Jordan Page stick-stop.
Millman made it 2-0 with 5:14 left in the half when Page picked up her second assist of the game by sliding a pass to the senior forward on the right post for her eighth goal of the season, tying her with line-mate Lauren Brooks for the team lead.
With 2:31 left in the second half, Hussey added an extra insurance goal for the Orange, knocking in a loose ball in front of Providence goalkeeper Kathi Weidman (nine saves) for her fourth marker of the season, making it 3-0.
Syracuse held a 22-9 advantage in shots, including 16-2 in the first half, and a 12-4 edge in penalty corners.
Millman's three points gives her 81 in her career, moving her into a tie with Michelle Aronowicz (1998-01) for 10th on the SU all-time list.
Stiver now has eight shutouts on the season and 20 in her career. The senior's career record now sits at 55-13.
The Orange is 12-0 for the second time in program history. The first was in 2008 when it started a program-best 14-0 on its way to its only Final Four appearance.
The top-ranked Orange heads to Amherst, Mass. next week to face Massachusetts on Thursday at 1 p.m. and No. 14 Stanford on Friday at 4 p.m. Both games will be played at UMass' Garber Field.
