On Saturday, Sept. 8, New York's College Team will lineup against one of the top-ranked college football teams in the country, No. 2 USC, at MetLife Stadium. Syracuse (0-1) hosts the Trojans (1-0) in New York's College Classic (3:30 p.m., ABC). Tickets and travel packages for New York's College Classic are available at www.nycollegeclassic.com.
"We didn't want to be discouraged," said head coach Doug Marrone. "We are moving ahead, moving forward. Obviously we're correcting mistakes that we have made in the game. We are trying to put ourselves, meaning our players, in the best situation to go out there. Sometimes my experience has been that when you play teams, like USC which is a very explosive team and the top-ranked team at the time in the country, it's actually a little bit easier. From a motivational standpoint, I think the players are aware of the situation. The assistant coaches are aware of the situation. Obviously I'm aware of the situation. We are working hard and are looking forward to a good week of practice."
Syracuse suffered a narrow defeat to Northwestern on Saturday (42-41) and is looking to capture its first win of 2012 this Saturday. The Orange have been working hard this week, learning from the NU game and preparing for what USC will bring to the gridiron.
"We were able to watch the film on Sunday," said senior wide receiver Marcus Sales. "We saw a lot of things that we could have done better. We will put it in the past. Now we just need to get ready for USC. I know that USC is a great team. We have to come out knowing the game plan inside and out. We have to execute. We can't afford to have any turnovers. We just have to play hard."
Sales was part of an explosive SU offense in the Northwestern game that scored 28 unanswered points after being down 35-13 midway through the third quarter. Senior quarterback Ryan Nassib had a record-breaking game against the Wildcats, setting the SU single-game records for completions (45), attempts (66), and yards (482). Nassib also tied the BIG EAST single-game completion record and broke the BIG EAST single-game attempts record.
"Ryan has worked extremely hard to put himself in this situation," said Marrone. "I couldn't ask for a better leader right now. He's doing everything he possibly can. We're just looking for other people to follow and step up and do the same types of things. He's not the only player that's doing it. There are other players on this team that are stepping up and making this team a better football team."
Against NU, Nassib threw four touchdowns and totaled 512 total offense yards. He was also named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and was one of nine quarterbacks named as the Manning Award Stars of the Week. Nassib and the Orange are now focusing in on their next opponent, USC.
"I feel the same way a little bit like I did going into last week's game," Nassib said. "I knew what our offense could do and what it was capable of and what the skill players and the o-line are capable of. It was no shock to me the performance that we did on Saturday. Going back and looking at the tape and learning from those mistakes can only make us more confident going into this next game."
