The legacy of Ernie Davis will be with the Orange on Saturday at MetLife Stadium. The Syracuse uniform will feature accessories honoring Davis and the impact he made. In 1961, Davis became the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. As part of the Nike Rivalry 2012 Uniform Series, every Syracuse student-athletes will wear a special edition undergarment under their jersey, Nike gloves and a commemorative patch on the jersey when the they take the field at MetLife Stadium against USC in New York's College Classic (3:30 p.m., ABC) on Saturday, Sept. 8.
The theme of the rivalry gear centers around 'The Elmira Express,' as Davis was dubbed early in his career, and the retired No. 44. Davis was the second of three Syracuse legends to wear #44. A College Football Hall of Famer, Davis wore the #44 between two others enshrined in the Hall of Fame in Jim Brown and Floyd Little.
The shirt that will be worn under Syracuse's uniforms features 'The Express,' #44 and the sleeve striping that was featured on the SU uniforms of Davis' era from 1959-61.
One of the all-time greats of college football, Davis was a three-time All-American running back, was named the MVP of two bowl games and played a pivotal role in Syracuse's 1959 National Championship. The Cleveland Browns was selected Davis in the first round of the 1962 National Football League Draft, however before he could make an impact in the NFL, he tragically died of leukemia in 1963.
The orange and blue gloves feature the Express train and #44. Special edition socks have 'Express' written across top of one of the socks and Syracuse University's zip code 13244 across the other. SU was granted permission by the United State postal service to change its zip code to 13244 as a way of remembering its players, like Davis, who have worn the number 44. The commemorative patch on SU's jerseys celebrates Davis' impact on college athletics, from the time of his graduation from Syracuse in 1962 to present day.
