A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse posted its first victory against the No. 1-ranked team in the nation since 2006 when it defeated Louisville on its home court on Saturday, Jan. 19.
The two teams were tied at halftime before Louisville took a 48-40 lead in the second half. Layups from juniors Baye Moussa Keita and C.J. Fair and freshman Jerami Grant help bring the Orange within three points at 49-46. Fair later converted a pair of free throws and Grant hit a basket to tie the game at 52-52 with 10:00 to play.
The Cardinals took a five-point advantage at the 7:37 mark before seven consecutive points by sophomore Michael Carter-Williams put the Orange up one, 62-61 with 6:17 remaining. Grant added a basket, but Louisville battled back and tied the game at 66-66 on Chane Behanan's layup at the 2:30 mark. A pair of free throws by Russ Smith gave UofL a two-point lead with less than two minutes to play, but Carter-Williams hit 1-of-2 free throws to cut the advantage to 68-67 with 53 seconds remaining.
On Louisville's ensuing possession, Carter-Williams intercepted a Cardinals' pass and took the ball the length of the court for a slam dunk to put the Orange ahead, 69-68 with 23 seconds on the clock. UofL missed a layup and Carter-Williams pulled down the rebound and was fouled. He hit the second free throw to give Syracuse a 70-68 lead with 13 second to play. He then secured the Orange's seventh consecutive victory with a steal on Louisville's final possession.
Senior Brandon Triche led the Orange with 23 points, while Carter-Williams had 16 points. Fair and Grant finished with 10 points each.
