NEW YORK – Former Orange forward Demetris Nichols was named the NBA Development League Performer of the Week for January 14th through 20th after three standout performances with the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
Nichols helped the Skyforce to a 3-0 record over the week, picking up consecutive wins against the Texas Legends and another victory against the Santa Cruz Warriors. Averaging 25.7 points against the Legends, Nichols shot 63 percent from the floor, tallying six rebounds and five assists.
In a 99-83 triumph against the Warriors, Nichols totaled a season-high 26 points, returning the following evening to match the same scoring marker.
As SU's 48th player to accumulate 1,000 career points, Nichols was the only member of the 2006-07 Orange lineup to start all 35 games and led the team in scoring scoring average (18.9), three-point baskets (100), free-throw percentage (.850) and minutes played average (34.8). Following a stellar senior year at Syracuse, he earned AP Honorable Mention All-America Honors and first-team all-district honors by the Basketball Times, National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and United States Basketball Writers of America (USBWA).
Nichols was drafted in the second round of the NBA Draft (53rd overall) by the Portland Trailblazers in 2007 but played with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls in 2007-08 and the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks in 2008-09 before joining the Sioux Falls Skyforce in August 2012.
