Update: Orange in the NFL
As the NFL postseason beings this weekend, seven former Syracuse football student-athletes are still in action with their respective professional teams. Four Orange alumni will face each other when the Baltimore Ravens (10-6) and the Indianapolis Colts (11-5) line up on the gridiron for a wild card playoff game, while the New England Patriots, that feature three former Orange, have a bye week.
Â
On the Baltimore Ravens is defensive tackle Arthur Jones and linebacker Jameel McClain. Baltimore fell in its final regular season game at Cincinnati, 23-7, and looks to secure a spot in the Divisional playoffs with a win against Indianapolis. Jones recorded five tackles, including two solo, at Cincinnati while McClain was placed on injured reserved on Dec. 22nd. McClain had 79 tackles, including 57, solo in the 2012 season.
Â
Defensive end Dwight Freeney and running back Delone Carter are SU's representatives on the Colts. Indianapolis defeated Houston in its final regular season game, 28-16. Freeney notched two tackles, including one sack, against the Texans. Carter has not seen action in the final three games of the season but finished the season with 32 carries for 122 yards and three touchdowns. Â
Â
Receiving a bye week this week is the New England Patriots (12-4) that boosts three Orange alumni, the most out of any NFL team this season. Cornerback Will Allen, strong safety Steve Gregory and defensive end Chandler Jones will play at home on Sunday, Jan. 13 in when they host a Divisional Playoff game against the highest remaining seed from the wild-card round. New England won its final game of the regular season by trouncing Miami, 28-0. Gregory notched one solo tackle, defended a pass and returned an interception for 13 yards against Miami. Jones, who started 13 of the 14 games he played in his rookie season, registered seven tackles, including three solo, and defended two passes against the Dolphins. Allen has not seen game action this season, after being placed on injured reserve on Aug. 27.
