SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange assistant men's lacrosse coach Lelan Rogers has been selected for induction into the New York State Section III Wrestling Hall of Fame. A standout wrestler and lacrosse player at Fulton High School and later Syracuse University, Rogers won a state high school wrestling title before enrolling at St. Lawrence University where he was a two-time All-American and the 1985 Division III national champion at 190 pounds.
Â
Rogers continued to wrestle at that weight after transferring to Syracuse where he posted a 53-10 record with 22 pins in two seasons. A two-time EIWA runner-up and NCAA qualifier, Rogers went 17-5 in 1985-86, led the Orange with eight pins, and won a New York State Tournament title. As a senior in 1986-87, Rogers was SU's team captain and was named the squad's Most Outstanding Wrestler after going 36-5 and registering a team-high 14 pins.
In addition to his dominance on the mat, Rogers was a faceoff specialist on the lacrosse field and helped 1987 Orange reach the NCAA semifinals. He also served as a lacrosse graduate assistant during SU's run of three straight national championships from 1988-90.
After spending five seasons at the head lacrosse coach at Cortland, Rogers returned to Syracuse University in 2006 as the director of lacrosse operations. He was elevated to assistant coach in 2008 and he has since coordinated an Orange defense that has ranked in the top five nationally three times.
Rogers joins Ben New (Canastota), Coach Randy Marrin (Carthage), Coach John Ryan (Westhill) and Brian Akley (Oswego) as members of the 2013 class. The group will be formally inducted at a dinner on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Borio's Restaurant in Cicero.
