Former Orange standout and Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone is moving west down the thruway. The Bronx native, who played tackle for the Orange from 1983 to 1985 and was a sixth-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Raiders, was introduced today as the head coach for the NFL's Buffalo Bills. In four seasons at Syracuse, Marrone led the Orange to two New Era Pinstripe Bowl victories and four wins against top 25 opponents.
"Doug has restored Syracuse football to its rightful place and we are appreciative of the foundation he has laid on and off the field for the future success of the program," said Syracuse University Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. "We wish him the absolute best in his opportunity in the NFL. We look forward to improving on our success, as we have great momentum heading into the ACC. We will put a head coach in place who will continue down the successful path we are on."
At Syracuse, Marrone mentored 23 All-BIG EAST selections and quarterback Ryan Nassib earned Pro Football Weekly All-America honors and was a 2012 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete. In 2012, the Syracuse offense set school records for: Total offense (5,681 yards); Total yards per game (473.4); Plays (939); Passing yards (3,619); Passing yards per game (301.6); Most touchdown passes (24); Completions (283); Pass attempts (449); First downs (300). In 2011, a school-record and league-leading 28 student-athletes were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
Syracuse University Chairman of the Board of Trustees Richard L. Thompson and Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor also expressed their gratitude for Marrone's contributions to the University in a statement:
"We congratulate Coach Marrone on having this opportunity to become a head coach at the highest level. Under his leadership, we have restored the rich, winning football tradition at Syracuse, and we wish him continued success as he moves to the National Football League.
"We are fully committed to continuing SU Football's successful trajectory and the commitment, work ethic, integrity, and support for the personal and academic development of our student-athletes that Doug and his coaching staff embedded in the program. Moving forward, we have full confidence in Dr. Daryl Gross to find the right successor to build on this success."
A veteran coach, Marrone's career includes stints in the National Football League as the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints (2006-08) and New York Jets (2002-05) and the collegiate level (Georgi Tech (1995-99), Georgia (2000) and Tennessee (2001).
Syracuse will join the Atlantic Coast Conference officially on July 1, 2013.
