Sykes Takes Second Straight Weekly Honor

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Syracuse guard Brittney Sykes has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the second time in as many weeks after helping lead the Orange (13-1, 1-0) to victory in its conference opener at Marquette on Saturday.

The Newark, N.J. native and 2012 McDonald's All-American scored 19 points, grabbed nine rebounds and recorded three steals in Syracuse's 92-79 victory at Marquette (8-6, 0-1) on Saturday night at the Al McGuire Center. She was 5-of-9 shooting from the field and went 9-of-10 at the free throw line as SU's winning streak went to six games.

Sykes took the same BIG EAST honor on Dec. 31 after recording career-highs in points (20) and rebounds (10) to record her first double-double in the Orange's dominating 87-48 win vs. Boise State in the regular season non-conference finale at the Carrier Dome on Dec. 30. She was 9-of-13 from the floor and added three steals in the win over the Broncos.

As head coach Quentin Hillsman's Orange approaches key conference games against Georgetown, DePaul and Connecticut, Sykes is playing her best basketball of the season, averaging 14.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.6 steals, while shooting 52 percent over the last five games after averaging 5.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 0.9 steals and shooting 40 percent over the first nine games.

Sykes is the first SU player to take weekly top-freshman honors since Kayla Alexander won the award on Dec. 9, 2009. She is the first to be awarded the honor twice in a single season since Erica Morrow in 2007-08 (Dec. 24, Feb. 11) and the first to win it two weeks in a row since Nicole Michael in 2006-07 (Nov. 27, Dec. 4).

Syracuse, for the last time as a BIG EAST member, will host Georgetown (10-4, 1-0) on Saturday at the Carrier Dome in a 3 p.m. tip-off as part of a doubleheader with the men's team (vs. Villanova, noon). Ticket-holders to the men's game receive free admission to the women's game.
