SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The center for the Orange from 1963-65 and a pioneer in the field of food safety, Pat Killorin is the recipient of the 2013 Zunic Award, presented by the Syracuse Football Club. Killorin will be honored at this year's Zunic Award dinner Friday, Oct. 4, at the Bellevue Country Club in Syracuse.
Killorin will also be recognized during the Orange's ACC opener Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Carrier Dome. Tickets for the Clemson game start at $29 and are available online, in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B), or by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
On the field, Killorin was a two-time All-American (1964-65) and blocked for the legendary Floyd Little who led the NCAA in all-purpose yards per game in 1965. Killorin was a two-time All-East First Team selection and was honored with the 1965 Bill Horr Award as the team's MVP. He played one year of professional football after being selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 1966 NFL Draft.
Off the field, Killorin was the vice president of Syracuse's University's Class of 1966 and he was a member of the Phi Kappa Alpha Honorary Fraternity.
Â
Killorin's life after football has been filled with many professional accomplishments. He is the former President/CEO of Patco Management, Inc., a nationally-known food safety consultant, and Prosan Inc., a professional food safety audit and training company. A current Baldwinsville, N.Y. resident, Killorin now works as a registered food safety sanitarian for Brulin Holdings.
Â
Killorin is a member of several associations and committees associated with food safety, including the Association of Food and Drug Officials, the New York State Sanitarian Advisory Committee and the Central Atlantic Sanitarians Association.
Â
In addition, Killorin is heavily involved in the Central New York community. He volunteers as a family care giver for Hospice and has donated his time to the Meals on Wheels program. In 2007, he was presented with the United Way of Central New York "Exceptional Volunteer" award. He's also held multiple voluntary youth coaching positions in the Syracuse area and Watertown.
                                                                 Â
The Zunic Award is given annually to anyone who exhibits the courage and spirit of Mike and Judy Zunic. A former SU football standout Mike, and his wife, Judy, died tragically on July 19, 1989 when a United Airlines flight crashed in Sioux City, Iowa, killing 111 passengers. During the emergency landing, a flight attendant asked for volunteers to help with the exit door and Mike and Judy volunteered. They perished in the crash while the people in the area of the plane where they were originally seated survived.
Â
Zunic was a four-year starter at linebacker for the Orange and he received his bachelor's degree in 1981 and his master's degree in 1982, both in speech communication.
Â
Those eligible for the award include current and former players, current and former coaches, the parents of current and former Orange men, season ticket holders and anyone associated with SU football.
