SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 2013-14 season officially began for the Syracuse women's basketball team on Tuesday as the Orange held its first practice of the season. The up-tempo and spirited session began the program's first campaign in the ACC as it comes off one of the most successful seasons in its history.
"We had a very good practice today," head coach Quentin Hillsman said. "I thought the pace was good. The tempo was good. We were really able to get up and down the court. That's what we need to do this year."
Hillsman welcomes six newcomers to the team, five freshman that comprise the 12th-best recruiting class in the country according to Blue Star Basketball Report, and one transfer. Guards Tasia Butler, Alexis Peterson and Isabella Slim, along with forwards Bria Day and Briana Day make up the freshmen group, while guard Maggie Morrison comes to SU as a transfer from Vanderbilt.
They join a Orange squad that returns three starters and nine total players fom the team that posted the best winning percentage in the program's NCAA era in 2012-13 when it went 24-8 (.750), including an 11-5 mark in its final BIG EAST season, good for third-place in the conference.
The Orange opens the season on Nov. 10 at Washington State before hosting the dome opener on Nov. 14 against Dartmouth. Syracuse opens its inaugural ACC season on Jan. 5 at NC State and hosts its first conference game on Jan. 9 vs. Duke.
