RALEIGH, N.C. — The Orange (3-3, 1-1 ACC) scored two late touchdowns to pull away from NC State (3-3, 0-3 ACC), defeating the Wolfpack 24-10 in front of 56,639 at Carter-Finley Stadium. The victory marked the team's first conference win as a member of the ACC.
Syracuse rushed for a season-high 362 yards in the contest and averaged 9.1 yards per rush. Jerome Smith and Prince-Tyson Gulley powered the Orange attack. Smith gained 140 yards on 19 carries and Gulley finished with 132 yards on nine attempts. Both running backs had one touchdown and broke off runs of at least 50 yards during the course of the game. Quarterback Terrel Hunt contributed 92 yards on the ground, the highest rushing total for an SU signal caller since Donovan McNabb (99 yards) versus Miami on Nov. 28, 1998.
Hunt completed 10-of-20 passes for 74 yards through the air. He was intercepted twice by NC State's Jack Tocho. Ashton Broyld paced all Orange receivers with three catches for 43 yards, including a career-long 39-yard reception in the second quarter.
Two Orange defenders had career days with Cameron Lynch posting a career- and game-high 14 tackles, including two for a loss. Durell Eskridge made 13 stops and intercepted his second pass of the season.
Syracuse opened the game's scoring on the first drive of the second quarer. Hunt found an opening in the NC State defense and scrambled 17 yards to the 1-yard line. Smith finished things off, pushing his way into the end zone to give the visitors a 7-0 lead with 11:11 to go in the half.
Later in the quarter, the two sides exchanged interceptions on three consecutive drives. NC State capitalized on SU's second turnover when Pete Thomas hit David Grinnage for a 21-yard touchdown to tie the score just before halftime.
In the second half, the two teams exchanged field goals, including a 27-yarder by the Wolfpack's Niklas Sade that knotted the game 10-10 with 10:12 left to play.
After the SU defense forced a punt on the next Wolfpack possession, Smith sprinted 57 yards down to the NC State 18-yard line. Gulley scampered to paydirt on the next play for a 16-10 SU advantage. A bad snap on the extra-point resulted in a failed pass from holder Charley Loeb to Kendall Moore and the score remained 16-10.
The Syracuse defense forced a three-and-out on the next Wolfpack series and the Orange took over on its own 47. A 48-yard burst by Gulley put the ball on the NC State 5-yard line. Two plays later Hunt sealed the victory, scoring from eight yards out.
For NC State, Thomas was 17-for-35 for 151 yards and a touchdown. Bryan Underwood led the Wolfpack receiving corps with six catches for 89 yards.
Syracuse is back in action next Saturday at Georgia Tech. The game kicks off at 12:30 p.m. at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta.
