DURHAM, N.C.--Â No. 3 Syracuse overcame a tough Duke defense to claim its second ACC victory in double overtime, 2-1 on Friday night in Durham, N.C. Lauren Brooks scored the game-winner while Jess Jecko recorded seven saves against the No. 7 Blue Devils.
Â
The Orange (11-1, 2-1 ACC) outshot Duke (10-3, 2-1 ACC) 25-15 and had one more penalty corner opportunity than the Blue Devils.
Â
Both teams came out strong on defense, with each team making impressive saves throughout the first 35 minutes. Syracuse was awarded a corner early in the game but a nice save of Leonie Geyer's shot and a defensive clear out of the offensive zone prevented an Orange score.
Â
Duke broke away midway through the first half and nearly scored but Jecko made an fantastic save. Five minutes later Anna Crumb made a defensive save on an open net to stop the Blue Devils from taking the lead.
Â
Jecko stepped up to the plate again near the end of the first stanza when a hard shot taken from outside of the circle was tipped up and almost over the reach of Jecko, but she made a leaping save and the score remained at 0-0.
Â
With 29 seconds remaining in the first half, the Orange attacked the net, rebounding two saved shots until Karlee Farr sent one into the right corner of the net on the third try to give the Orange a 1-0 lead at halftime. It was the freshman's fifth goal of the season and her fourth in the last two games.
Â
The Orange came out strong in the second half, nearly scoring off a shot by Crumb that almost trickled over the goal line, but a foul committed by SU stopped the play and sent the ball the other way.
Â
Syracuse couldn't keep its advantage and Duke finally got on the board off a corner, its fifth in the second half, with a hard shot taken by Hannah Barreca at the top of the circle getting past all SU defenders and into the goal to tie the game at 1-1 and force overtime.
Â
Despite some close calls on both sides of the ball, neither team could put an end to the game in the first 15 minutes of overtime and the contest continued into a second period of extra field hockey.Â
Lauren Brooks finally put an end to the battle, scoring in the 91st minute of play when she got a shot off eight yards out off a deflection by the goalie to give the Orange a 2-1 victory. The goal was the junior forward's ninth of the season and her second game-winner.
The win puts the Orange in a second-place tie in the ACC standings at 2-1 behind first-place Maryland (3-0). Syracuse still has the Terrapins on its schedule (Oct. 18) and holds the tiebreaker over the two teams closest to it in the standings, Duke (2-1) and Virginia (2-2) by virtue of victories against them. North Carolina and Boston College are tied at 1-2, while Wake Forest is 0-3.
Syracuse returns home to host New Hampshire on Sunday at 3 p.m.
