Strong Front Five Aiding SU's Success on the Ground
10/14/2013 3:14:00 PM | Football
The Syracuse offensive line is a force to be reckoned with this season, especially when it comes to blocking for the Orange rushing unit. The front five has paved the way for two consecutive games with 300+ yards on the ground and helped the team become 22nd in the nation and third in the ACC in rushing yards per game (220.7).
Â
"Both Jerome Smith and Prince-Tyson Gulley have done a great job running the ball, as well as the young kids, but really when you have multiple guys rushing the ball like that, you know it starts up front. Hats off to [offensive line] coach Perles and the job he has done with those kids. They're really playing well, the five of those kids are playing well together right now."
Â
The line is led by senior captain Macky MacPherson who plays center and was named to the 2013 Rimington Award Watch List. To his left are junior Sean Hickey at tackle and sophomore Rob Trudo at guard and to his right are sophomores Ivan Foy (tackle) and Nick Robinson (guard).
Â
Syracuse had a season-high 362 rushing yards at North Carolina State on Saturday with Jerome Smith and Prince-Tyson Gulley both rushing for more than 100 yards. Terrel Hunt nearly hit the 100-yard mark, finishing with 92, and had he hit triple digits it would have been the first time three backs rushed for 100 yards each since 1997.
Â
"On the sideline they just kept saying, 'Coach, keep running it. We've got them.' When you're offensive linemen are talking that way to you, you look them up in the eye and you say, 'Okay let's go.'"
Â
The Orange heads to Atlanta, Ga. to take on another sound rushing team, Georgia Tech. The matchup will begin at 12:30 p.m. and will be aired on the ACC Network.
