SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Six former Syracuse men's basketball players will head into the start of the 2013-14 NBA season having secured roster spots on their respective squads.
Joining NBA veterans Carmelo Anthony, Wesley Johnson and Dion Waiters will be first-year players Michael Carter-Williams, Arinze Onuaku and James Southerland.
Carter-Williams was the 11th overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2013 NBA Draft. In seven preseason games, Cater-Williams averaged 9.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.1 steals per contest. The point guard also limited his miscues, finishing with a 3.1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
An NBA D-League All-Star selection in 2013, Onuaku landed with the New Orleans Pelicans for the upcoming campaign. Onuaku spent last season with the Canton Charge of the D-League, producing 12.6 points and 9.5 rebounds in 38 games. His best outing of the preseason came in his debut with eight points and seven boards.
Southerland, a 2013 Syracuse graduate, played his way onto the Charlotte Bobcats following a productive summer and pre-season. He played a total of 12 games during the NBA Summer League, averaging 5.3 points and 2.1 rebounds.
Anthony will enter his 13th NBA season and fourth with the New York Knicks. Last year, the six-time All-Star led the Knicks to their first division title in 19 years, finishing with a league-high 28.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
Johnson makes his debut with the Los Angeles Lakers after spending two years with the Minnesota Timberwolves and one with the Phoenix Suns. A 2010-11 All-Rookie 2nd Team honoree, Johnson averaged 8.0 points and 2.5 rebounds in 50 games during the 2012-13 season.
After a solid rookie campaign, Waiters suits up for his second season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He ranked second on the team in scoring last year at 14.7 points per game and was named to the All-Rookie 1st team at the conclusion of the season.
