ST. LOUIS – Syracuse freshman guard Tyler Ennis is one of 10 players selected to the 2014 Integris Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award Preseason Watch List, announced by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Monday, Nov. 4.
The annual award, which recognizes the top freshman in college basketball, was renamed to honor Wayman Tisdale beginning in 2011. Tisdale was the first freshman to receive All-America honors from the USBWA in 1983 when he averaged 24.5 points and 10.3 rebounds. He went on to become a three-time All-American at Oklahoma, was a member of the USA Olympic gold medal team in 1984 and played 12 seasons in the NBA. Tisdale died of complications from cancer in 2009 at the age of 44.
A native of Brampton, Ontario, Ennis enters his first year with the Orange. In his Carrier Dome debut, an exhibition game against Holy Family on Nov. 1, the freshman scored 12 points and dished out three assists. He helped Syracuse to a 4-0 record during a four-game exhibition schedule against Canadian schools in August. Ennis started all four games and averaged 10.0 points and 3.0 assists per game.
Former SU standout Carmelo Anthony won the the award as National Freshman of the Year in 2003.
The award is to be presented to the national freshman of the year at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards on April 14, 2014, at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.
