SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Three Syracuse football student-athletes have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Macky MacPherson, Sam Rodgers and Riley Dixon were all chosen as members of the 2013 class for their performances both athletically and in the classroom.
Â
MacPherson, a senior, captain and starting center for the Orange, has shined both on the field and off. He was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District team and was on the 2011 and 2012 BIG EAST All-Academic Team. As a geography major, he has made the Syracuse Athletic Director's honor roll every semester and has been named to the Dean's List on four occasions. On the field, MacPherson has led an offensive line that blocked for 1,000 yard rushers in 2011 and 2012 and a 2013 rushing unit that ranks fourth in the ACC, averaging 197.8 yards per game.
Â
Dixon, Syracuse's starting punter, has become a standout player on the field and has excelled in the classroom as an accounting major. He was named to the 2013 Phil Steele Midseason All-ACC third team and is a nominee for the 2013 Ray Guy Award. Dixon set the SU punting record with a 75 yard kick against Clemson and has 12 punts of at least 50 yards this season. His 43.1 punting average ranks 3rd in the ACC and 21st in the nation.
Â
Rodgers is a junior long snapper for the Orange and is a dedicated student, athlete and member of the community. He was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District team and to the 2011 and 2012 BIG EAST All-Academic teams. He is the president of Orange Uplifting Athletes, which has raised more than $9,000 in the last five months toward brain cancer research. He is a member of the Syracuse Fellowship of Christian Athletes and co-founded a chapter at a local middle school. Rodgers participated in a Haiti Mission Trip last spring and makes visits to local middle schools to talk about the value of good nutrition.Â
Â
All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot. First-, second- and third-team All-America members will be selected later this month. Â
