HOUSTON — Scott Shafer is excited to extend his first season as head coach one more game for the Texas Bowl where the Orange will take on Minnesota on Dec. 27 at 6 pm ET. Shafer is one of six first-year head coaches to make the postseason this year.
"I'm excited to be here in Houston," Shafer said today at a press conference at Reliant Stadium. "It's a great opportunity to represent the ACC against a great team in Jerry Kill's Minnesota team, a Big Ten opponent. I know our kids are extremely excited to get down here and get a feel for the area, the culture and immerse ourselves for a few days in Texas and enjoy the experience of the bowl game. It's something that people up in Syracuse are looking forward to."
Syracuse will face a familiar foe in Minnesota as the Orange played the Gophers in 2012. Running back David Cobb leads Minnesota with 1,111 rushing yards. He averages of 92.6 yards per game, which ranks 29th in the nation.
"They've got a doggone good running back in Cobb," Shafer said. "He can run the football and he runs it well because they block it well up front. They're a sound, tough team. They're going to be a team that doesn't shoot themselves in the foot. I've seen them get more consistent with the way they approach the game, the mistakes they don't make. They don't throw a lot of interceptions and they play a good, tough brand of football, but it's the run game first and foremost."
This is the third bowl game in four years for the Orange and the 25th in program history. SU has won its last two bowl appearances, defeating Kansas State and West Virginia, respectively, in the 2010 and 2012 New Era Pinstripe Bowls. Attending this year's Texas Bowll will help the Syracuse program continue to grow.
"On so many fronts it helps your program," Shafer said of reaching a bowl game. "Not only the extra practice time, but also the opportunity to continue the process of learning. More football. More videotape time in an environment where the kids aren't in school anymore either, which is big. It's more of an NFL feel to the week. The kids get that opportunity to prepare. You don't have to hurry. You have a little bit more time to take a few seconds to retool your teaching approach and take a look at where you are."
The team travels to Houston on Dec. 23. Tickets and travel packages for the 2013 Texas Bowl are available at SUAthletics.com/bowlcentral.
