A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse had its eight-game winning streak snapped in a 75-71 setback in overtime at Villanova on Saturday, Feb. 26.
The Orange trailed by six, 32-26, at intermission, but opened the second half strong and went up by one, 33-32, at the 18:50 mark. Neither team could pull away as Syracuse took its largest lead of the half at 59-53 on junior C.J. Fair's jumper with 3:36 on the clock. That would be SU's last points of regulation as Villanova tallied six straight points, the last three coming on Ryan Arcidiacono's three-pointer with three seconds remaining, to force overtime.
Three consecutive points by Michael Carter-Williams gave the Orange a 64-63 advantage, but the Wildcats took the lead for good on James Bell's three pointer at the 2:43 mark. SU cut the lead to one on a Brandon Triche free throw with 47 seconds remaining, but that was close as Syracuse could get.
Triche led the Orange with 23 points, while Carter-Williams had 17. Fair added 10 points, while sophomore Rakeem Christmas grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Pittsburgh had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 64-61 loss at Louisville on Monday, Jan. 28. The Panthers own a 12-2 record at the Peterson Events Center.
Talib Zanna leads the team in scoring, averaging 11.2 points per game. Tray Woodall and Lamar Patterson are also averaging double figures in scoring, contributing 10.7 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. Woodall is also averaging a team high of 5.7 assists per game. Steven Adams is the teams' leading rebounder, averaging 6.3 per contest, and shot blocker. He ranks fourth in the BIG EAST, averaging 2.0 blocks per game.
Jamie Dixon is in his 14th year at Pittsburgh and 10th as its head coach. During his tenure, he has guided the Panthers to three BIG EAST championships and earned four national coach of the year awards.
