
Martens and Block Named Orange Scholar-Athletes of the Week

Junior Jake Martens (Austin, Texas) of the men's crew team and senior Linley Block (Stratham, N.H.) of the women's lacrosse team are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 11th.
In the fall, Martens helped the V8 "A" crew to an eighth place finish at the Princeton Chase. He was in seat six for the 3-mile head race, in which SU finished with at time of 12:44.35. He was also in Syracuse's V4A boat that won its race at the Syracuse Invitational. The V4A won the race with a time of 16:40.7. As a sophomore, Martens saw time at the bow for the varsity eight boat. Martens has been honored on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester of his college career so far.
In the Orange's season-opener at Jacksonville, Block registered caused two turnovers and a ground ball. As a junior, she started in every game and was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection. Last season she finished the season with 10 points (2g, 8a) and posted career highs in ground balls (20), draw controls (16) and caused turnovers (7). Block has been honored on the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for the 2009-10, 2010-11, and 2011-12 season. She has also been named to the Athletic Directors Honor Roll every semester of her college career.
Martens and the men's crew team opens up the 2013 season on March 30th against Princeton and Georgetown. Block and the women's lacrosse team have its 2013 home opener this Sunday against Maryland at 1 p.m.
