Penney Honored as SU's BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete

Syracuse track and field and cross country standout Lauren Penney has been named the Syracuse BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete, sponsored by American Eagle Outfitters, by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee. Â As the Orange female representative, Penney will receive $2,000 toward graduate studies.

Penney has had an historic career in both cross country and track and field at Syracuse. In 2011, Penney was named SU's first female cross country All-American after finishing 29th in the NCAA Championship. Penney also garnered All-America honors from the USTFCCCA in the outdoor track and field season in 2012.

The Succasunna, NJ native holds three school records in the outdoor 5,000m run (16:09.44), the indoor mile run (4:37.41) and the indoor 3,000m run (9:06.32). Â Penney was also named SU's Female Athlete of the Year at the 'Cuse Awards in May 2012.

Penney is currently a graduate student and is studying secondary social studies education. Penney has been named a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team during all four years as an undergraduate. She has also been on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for the fall semesters in from 2008-12 and in the spring from 2010-12.

Penney and the rest of the Syracuse track and field team heads to the BIG EAST Championships in Geneva, Ohio, at the SPIRE Institute on Saturday, Feb. 16th and Sunday, Feb. 17th.
