CHARLESTON – In a game that featured five home runs, including two each for senior Veronica Grant and junior Jasmine Watson, Syracuse (3-0) dismantled tournament host Charleston (0-3), 11-0 in five innings on Saturday evening at Patriots Point.
"To be 3-0 right now is a great confidence builder, but today was probably the best game that we have played all season," said head coach Leigh Ross. "Today we finally pulled it together and we did everything very well."
The triumph marked the third straight shutout that the Orange has registered in the Cougar Classic, as senior pitcher Stacy Kuwik allowed just one hit all night, striking out four Cougar batters.
The Orange got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, helped out by a double to centerfield from senior Veronica Grant that sent pinch runner Emily Thompson home.
The Syracuse bats came alive in the second inning as Grant, junior Jasmine Watson and sophomore Julie Wambold all slammed a trio of consecutive home runs out of the park to extend the SU lead to 5-0.
Grant and Watson didn't stop there though, as Grant hit her second home run of the game and ninth of her career in the fourth inning, sending junior Shirley Daniels home.
SU finished off the Cougars in the final inning as Watson sent another ball flying, hitting her second home run of the game to send Daniels across the plate once again, setting the score at 11-0. The slam, brings Watson's career total to 21.
Together, the duo of Watson and Grant finished the game with three and two RBIs, respectively.
Due the weather, the second matchup between Syracuse and Akron has been cancelled. The Orange will return to action tomorrow, taking on James Madison at 10 a.m. in the final game of the Cougar Classic.
