JMU 8, Syracuse 0
CHARLESTON – Senior Veronica Grant had the lone hit of the afternoon as Syracuse (3-1) dropped an 8-0 decision to James Madison (4-1) on the final day at Patriots Point. The loss marked the only Orange setback in the tournament, as Syracuse finished 3-1 in the Cougar Classic.
SU struggled to get the bats going early, as Duke's pitcher Jailyn Ford combined for 13 strike outs, retiring three of four Orange batters in the first inning.
Looking to rebound from a 3-0 deficit in the third inning, freshman Riley Johnson stepped up to the plate after freshman Corinne Ozanne walked to first. After Johnson fouled out, senior Morgan Nandin was tagged out at first and Danielle Chitkowski struck out looking, ruling out an early come back.
A trio of hits from the Dukes in the bottom of the fifth inning set Syracuse back even further, as SU entered the sixth inning trailing 7-0. With two outs, Grant sent a ball flying to right field for a single, but the centerfielder's hit wasn't enough to keep the Orange alive as junior Jasmine Watson struck out on the next at bat.
JMU added one more run in the sixth, as Erica Field singled up the middle to send Hannah Hayes home to end the game.
Next weekend, the Orange will travel across the country to compete in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. There, SU will matchup against some of its toughest opponents, facing off against Florida, Stanford, Long Beach State and San Diego State.
