SU Completes Day 1 at BIG EAST Championships

Day 1 Men's Results | Day 1 Women's Results
GENEVA, OHIO - The Syracuse track and field team wrapped up day one of competition at the BIG EAST Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The men currently sit in ninth place with 11 points while the women are in tied for seventh place with Rutgers with nine points. Action continues tomorrow at 8 a.m.
In the 5000m run, the Orange had three harriers finish in sixth through eighth place. Leading SU was sophomore Martin Hehir finished in sixth place after finishing with a time of 14:22.87. Senior Tito Medrano completed the race in seventh (14:25.32) while sophomore Reed Kamyszek finished in eighth (14:27.03).
The men also placed fourth in the distance medley, finishing in 9:49.71. Sophomores Andrew Bennison and Ryan Urie as well as seniors Matthew Brinkley and Andrew Nelson competed for SU.
In the long jump, senior Will Watson placed ninth with a mark of 6.96m.
Sophomore Donald Politt (7.91), senior Amadou Gueye (8.00) and sophomore Darren McCluskey (8.42) all qualified for the men's 60m hurdle final which takes place tomorrow. Sophomore Jihaad Howard (6.89) and junior Jaquan Holland (6.89) qualified for the 60m dash tomorrow as well.
On the women's side, freshman Shania Harrison qualified for the women's 60m dash, recording a time of 7.51. Brenna Nerud's time of 2:50.28 guaranteed her a spot in the women's 1000m run tomorrow.
Junior Sarah Pagano ran to a fifth place finish in the women's 5000m run with a time of 16:30.17. Senior Erin Cawley (16:42.57) and junior Jessie Petersen (17:19.11) finished in eighth and 13th places, respectively. Freshman Emily Nist completed the race in 17:41.79, which was good for 17th place.
In the women's distance medley, the team of Nerud, freshman Rebecca Robinson, junior Molly Malone and senior Lauren Penney finished in fifth place with a time of 11:20.03.
Freshman Mikayla Pearce jumped to a 10th place finish in the long jump, with a mark of 5.54m, while sophomore Klarissa Ricks finished in 20th after jumping 5.05m.
