PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – A solid fourth inning performance propelled Syracuse (4-3) to a 4-2 victory against Colorado State (6-8) on the second day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
.
After both the Orange and the Rams remained scoreless through the third inning, the Orange bats got going in the fourth. With two runners on and one out, sophomore Mary Dombrowski singled up the middle, driving sophomore pinch runner, Korena Fenton home.
Junior Shirley Daniels followed with another single to first base, loading the bases. On her next at bat, senior Veronica Grant walked, bringing senior Morgan Nandin home for another run.
Syracuse concluded the impressive inning with two more runs after freshman Danielle Chitkowski reached first on a Colorado State fielding error, sending Dombrowski and Daniels home for a 4-0 lead.
Despite a pair of hits from junior Jasmine Watson and Daniels, the Orange was unable to capitalize on the opportunities, but held off the Rams from scoring after two back-to-back singles in the top of the sixth inning.
Colorado State made one final attempt to come from behind, as junior Ashlie Ortega followed a double from junior Kendal Butterfield with a single through the left side. With junior Cassy Mosser reaching next on a fielder's choice, Butterfield cruised home and sophomore Shae Rodriguez sent sophomore pinch runner Haley David home with another single through the right side to set the score at 4-2.
With two outs already, SU regrouped and Daniels caught an easy pop fly in right field to end the game, giving the Orange their first win of the weekend to halt a three-game skid.
Syracuse will return to action tomorrow to conclude the weekend with games against Stanford at 5 p.m. (ET) and Long Beach State at 7:30 p.m. (ET), before returning back home.
