PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Syracuse softball (3-1) will head out across the country this week, traveling to Palm Springs, Calif. to open another portion of this year's competitive non-conference schedule. Competing in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic (formerly the Cathedral City Classic), the Orange is no stranger to this tournament, as SU has been a yearly member since the 2009-10 season.
This season's slate features Syracuse matchups with two top 25 opponents, as SU will take on No. 5/5 Florida and No. 17/20 Stanford. The Orange will also face San Diego State, who received votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll this week.
The Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic spans across four days this year, featuring 35 teams in total, with 22 that made last season's NCAA Tournament, nine that made the NCAA Super Regionals and five-of-eight teams that made the Women's College World Series.
COUGAR CLASSIC IN REVIEW:
The Orange went 3-1 last weekend in the Cougar Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston. Syracuse posted a pair of shutouts on day one, defeating ETSU and Towson by scores of 4-0 and 7-0. The next day, SU returned to take down tournament host Charleston, 11-0. The victory featured five SU home runs, including three consecutive from senior Veronica Grant, junior Jasmine Watson and sophomore Julie Wambold. Senior pitcher Stacy Kuwik allowed just one Cougar hit, while retiring 10 batters.
HOME RUNS AND HOME TOWN TIES:
Senior Veronica Grant and junior Jasmine Watson both hammered two home runs each against Charleston. Grant and Watson will also be playing in front of a home town crowd this weekend, as both call the state of California home, residing just two hours outside of the Big League Dreams park.
GRANT EARNS BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL:
Grant was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after helping the Orange to a 3-1 week at the Cougar Classic. Grant hit .357 with a .857 slugging percentage, after going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two home runs in an 11-0 SU shutout against of Charleston on Saturday afternoon.
