CLEMSON, S.C. -Â Syracuse women's rowing began its 2013 season on Saturday with one victory and three second-place finishes at Clemson's Lake Hartwell against the host Tigers, Boston University, Indiana and Purdue.
Â
The result shows another step in the process," head coach Justin Moore said. "I think the women handled the circumstances pretty well, with late lineup changes. Physically the crew is where it needs to be. We have to become better at racing in close quarters and executing a race plan. That will come with more experience."
Â
The Orange's second varsity four of Ulbrich, Laura Adams, McMullen, Horner and Frank recorded the squad's first victory of the season, jumping out to an early lead and completing the 2K course in 7:49.5, a full two seconds in front of second-place Clemson (7:51.5).
Â
In the first varsity eight, the Orange crew coxed by Kristina Herb of Holly Johnston, Anna Kaszycki, Carmen Failla, Emma Basher, Georgia Hamilton, Amy Ludovici, Maggie McCrudden and Alex Zadravec finished second to Clemson in a time of 6:30.1, less than two seconds behind the host crew (6:28.5). Both crews had substantial open water over the rest of the field as third-place Indiana finished in 6:41.7.
Â
Two other SU crews record second-place results, with just Clemson finishing ahead of them. In the second varsity eight, the boat led by coxswain Katherine Isaza finished in 6:51.9 behind the Tigers' boat in 6:40.8 and ahead of third-place Boston University (6:53.0). In the first varsity four, coxswain Gillian Carlucci's SU crew finished in 7:38.7, behind Clemson (7:34.4) and ahead of third-place Indiana (7:45.4).
Â
The Orange's freshman eight finished in third place out of five boats in a time of 7:22.5.
Â
Syracuse returns to action at the Kittle Cup on the Charles River vs. Boston University on March 30.
