SAN JOSE, Calif. – A trip to the "Sweet 16" is on the line when fourth seed Syracuse (27-9) faces No. 12 seed California (21-11) in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Mar. 23. Tip off in San Jose is set for 9:40 p.m. Eastern time.
Saturday's game will be televised on TBS. Fans can listen to the action on the Syracuse IMG Radio Network and its flagship TK99 (99.5FM).
SECOND-ROUND REWIND
Syracuse dominated in an 81-34 victory against Montana in the second round of the championship on Thursday night. The Orange set the tournament record for largest margin of victory for a team seeded third or lower. In addition, the 34 points is the lowest total SU has allowed in a tournament game, dating back to 1957.
Senior Brandon Triche paced the Orange offense. He was 5-for-6 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range, on his way to 20 points. Junior C.J. Fair added 13 points, while freshman DaJuan Coleman came off the bench to contribute 12 points.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
California advanced to Ornthe third round by upsetting No. 5 seed UNLV, 64-61, in the second round on Thursday. The victory improved the Golden Bears record to 21-11.
Pac -12 Player of the Year and Naismith Award candidate Allen Crabbe leads the California offense. He is averaging 18.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Junior Justin Cobbs was voted to the All-Pac-12 Second Team. He leads the team with 154 assists to along with 15.4 points per game. David Krash is the Golden Bears' leading rebounder (7.0 rpg.) and shot blocker (1.7 bpg.).
Mike Montgomery is in his fifth season at the helm of the California program. He has guided the Golden Bears to four post-season appearances and its first conference championship in 50 years in 2010.
THE SERIES
Syracuse defeated California in the only previous meeting between the two schools. The squads met in Madison Square Garden in the 2K Sports Classic in 2009-10. Scoop Jardine scored 22 points and Wesley Johnson posed a double-double to lead the Orange to a 95-73 victory.
