SAN JOSE, Calif. – In a back-and-forth battle that came down to the final minute of play, fourth-seeded Syracuse held on to the lead and defeated No. 12 Cal, 66-60, in the third round of the 2013 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at the HP Pavilion. With the victory, the Orange advances to its 18th NCAA Sweet 16 and third in the last four seasons.
Junior C.J. Fair led the offense with 18 points, registering his 30th double-digit scoring game of the season. Senior James Southerland (14 points), sophomore Michael Carter-Williams (12) and junior Baye Moussa Keita (11) also scored in double figures. Southerland paced the Orange on the boards, grabbing nine rebounds.
The Orange led by eight at the half, 32-24, and extended the lead to 14, 44-30, with 11:11 left in the game. Cal chipped away at the lead with four straight free throws to cut the SU lead to eight, 47-39, before Moussa Keita tipped in a bucket to lift Syracuse ahead by 10, 49-39, with six minutes left in the game.
Cal cut the Orange lead to seven, 58-51, on back-to-back three-point field goals by Allen Crabbe and Tyrone Wallace with 1:52 left in the game, but Syracuse did not allow the Bears to get any closer. The Orange hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 1:02 of the game to seal the victory.
Syracuse opened the contest on an 11-4 run, including an early three-pointer from Triche, who scored five of SU's first eight points. Following a 7-0 spurt, the Golden Bears shaved the lead to two points at 11-9 with 11:26 remaining in the opening frame, Southerland hit his first three ball of the night and Carter-Williams had a slam from Fair and made the free throw to give the Orange an eight-point lead, 19-11, with 7:54 left in the half.
With less than four minutes remaining in the half, SU took its largest lead of the game, 25-15, on a run sparked by six points from Fair.
The win improves Syracuse's NCAA Tournament record to 58-35, and head coach Jim Boeheim's tournament record to 50-27. His 50 wins ranks fourth in NCAA history behind Mike Krzyzewski (80), Dean Smith (65) and Roy Williams (60).
Syracuse will play Indiana on Thursday, March 28 in the East Regional semifinal in Washington, DC.
