WASHINGTON, D.C. – Fourth-seed Syracuse makes its third appearance in the NCAA Tournament "Sweet 16" in the last four years and 18th overall when it takes on No. 1 seed Indiana on Thursday, Mar. 28. The contest will be the second game of the night at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. Tipoff is scheduled for 9:45 p.m. Eastern time. The Orange enters the contest with a 28-9 record, while the Hoosiers are 29-6.
Thursday's game will be televised on CBS. Fans can listen to the action on the Syracuse IMG Radio Network and its flagship TK99 (99.5FM).
BOEHEIM REACHES 50
Syracuse's win against California in the third round was the 50th NCAA Tournament victory for Orange head coach Jim Boeheim. That total ranks fourth in NCAA history behind Mike Krzyzewski (80), Dean Smith (65) and Roy Williams (60). Coach Boeheim has guided SU to a record of 50-27 in tournament play.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse defeated California, 66-60, in the NCAA Tournament third round to advance to the "Sweet 16" for the 18th time in school history.
The Orange led by eight, 32-24, at halftime and increased its lead to 14 with 11:11 to play. Cal chipped away at the lead and eventually cut SU's advantage to seven at 58-51 on back-to-back three pointers. Syracuse held off the Bears' comeback attempt by hitting 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final 1:02 to seal the victory.
Junior C.J. Fair led the offense with 18 points, registering his 30th double-digit scoring game of the season. Senior James Southerland (14 points), sophomore Michael Carter-Williams (12) and junior Baye Moussa Keita (11) also scored in double figures. Southerland paced the Orange on the boards, grabbing nine rebounds.
SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS
Indiana won the Big 10 regular-season title and earned the No. 1 seed in the East Region. The Hoosiers are 29-6 this season.
IU is led by All-Big 10 First Team honorees Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo. Zeller leads the team in scoring (16.7 ppg.) and rebounding (8.0 rpg.), while Oladipo, the Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year, is averaging 13.6 ppg. and leads the squad with 75 steals. In addition, Will Sheehey was voted the Big 10 Sixth Man of the Year.
Tom Crean is in his fifth year as the head coach at Indiana. He is 84-81 during his tenure at IU. He was named the 2013 USBWA District V Coach of the Year and has guided the Hoosiers to the "Sweet 16" for the second consecutive year.
THE SERIES
Syracuse owns a 3-1 advantage in the series against Indiana, including a 76-63 win in the championship of the 1998 Maui Classic, which is the most recent meeting between the schools.
The squads have met once before in NCAA Tournament play. The Hoosiers defeated the Orange, 74-73, in the 1987 national championship game in the Superdome.
