WASHINGTON, D.C. – #16/18 Syracuse (29-9), fresh off an upset victory against #4/t4 Indiana in the NCAA Tournament's "Sweet 16," has advanced to an "Elite Eight" matchup with #15/16 Marquette (26-8). The two BIG EAST Conference members will meet on Saturday, March 30, at 4:30 p.m.
Saturday's game will be televised on CBS. Fans can listen to the action on the Syracuse IMG Radio Network and its flagship TK99 (99.5FM).
BOEHEIM REACHES 50
Syracuse's win against California in the third round was the 50th NCAA Tournament victory for Orange head coach Jim Boeheim. That total ranks fourth in NCAA history behind Mike Krzyzewski (80), Dean Smith (65) and Roy Williams (60). Coach Boeheim has guided SU to a record of 51-27 in tournament play.
HOW THE ORANGE GOT HERE
Syracuse's defense helped limit Indiana to 16-of-48 from the field (.333) and forced 19 Hoosier turnovers. The Orange built an advantage that reached 18 in the first half and did not trail after senior Brandon Triche's dunk made it 4-3 in the early going.
Sophomore guard Michael Carter-Williams finished with a career-high 24 points and had five rebounds and four steals. Triche, his backcourt partner, added 14 points, and junior forward C.J. Fair contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Marquette earned a #3 seed in the East Region and enter Saturday's contest with a 26-8 overall record. The Golden Eagles were 14-4 in BIG EAST Conference play and tied for first during the regular season.
Marquette has advanced in the NCAA Tournament by defeating Davidson (59-58), Butler (74-72) and Miami (71-61).
Junior guard Vander Blue is the club's top scorer, averaging 14.8 points per outing. Junior forward DaVante Gardner, who had 26 points and eight boards in the regular-season win with Syracuse, is averaging 11.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per outing.The club's top rebounder is senior swingman Trent Lockett, who is average 5.1 rebounds an outing.
Buzz Williams is in his fifth season as the Marquette head coach. He owns a 122-53 record with the Golden Eagles. He guided Marquette into the Sweet 16 a season ago.
THE SERIES
Syracuse owns a 8-5 advantage in the series against Marquette. The Golden Eagles won in Milwaukee on Feb. 25, 74-71. The two clubs met in the 2011 NCAA Tournament and Marquette won, 66-62.
