Louisville, K.Y – After opening the BIG EAST slate with a loss, sophomore Mary Dombrowski belted a two-run solo shot to propel the Syracuse softball team (12-15, 1-1) past No. 11/11 Louisville (27-6, 1-1), 4-2, in the second game of this afternoon's doubleheader at Ulmer Stadium.
Junior Shirley Daniels continued her success on the base paths, stealing two bases in the first game of the day to increase her season total to 13 stolen bases. The rightfielder has not been caught stealing once this year.
Regrouping in game two, Syracuse got off to a hot start, as freshman Corinne Ozanne singled up the middle to score senior Morgan Nandin from third.
One batter later, sophomore Julie Wambold's single to first knocked in senior Jasmine Watson from third for a 2-0 advantage. With two outs in the top of the fourth, Dombrowski hit her first career homerun over the right centerfield fence to give the Orange a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Louisville answered with a two-run RBI to cut the lead in half, 4-2, but with sophomore Lindsay Taylor at the mound in the bottom of the seventh, SU didn't allow the Cards a single run, locking up the Orange win.
In the first game of the day, SU broke open a scoreless game in the top of the third when Watson doubled off the left field wall to score Daniels.
Syracuse couldn't hold on to advantage though, as Louisville took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth after a two-run homer by Taner Fowler. The Cardinals followed with three more runs, stretching the lead to 5-1 heading into the sixth inning.
Louisville pitcher Carlissa Connell forced out the next three Orange batters before the Cards finished the game with a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to secure an 8-1 victory.
Syracuse is back in action tomorrow, concluding the three-game series with an afternoon matchup against the Cards slated for noon.
