SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Fifteen former Syracuse football players displayed their skills, speed and strength this afternoon in front of scouts, coaches and general managers representing 29 National Football League organizations. The former student-athletes participated in a variety of drills and individual position workouts in the weight room and on the field in the Manley Field House arena in hopes of achieving their dreams of playing in the NFL.
"I'm extremely excited," said quarterback Ryan Nassib. "This is something I've been working for my whole life – to have the opportunity to play in the NFL. Yeah, I'm a little bit surprised with all the hype and stuff like that, but we've got some good football players out here and having the opportunity to showcase our stuff is pretty cool."
Four of the former student-athletes who participated in Pro Day, including Nassib, offensive tackle Justin Pugh, strong safety Shamarko Thomas and wide receiver Alec Lemon, represented the Orange at the NFL combine in February. The former Orange players who were not at the combine took advantage of today's workouts to impress NFL scouts from around the league.
"Deon Goggins today really lit it up," said SU assistant athletics director for athletic performance Will Hicks. "I mean, he verticaled 37.5 [inches]. He ran in the high 4.7s, so he put himself on the map today. But he also did that in the all-star game [2013 NFLPA Collegiate Game], he played in. He had a caused fumble, a sack, a tackle for loss, but what he did today was show his speed."
The 2013 Orange, led by first-year head coach Scott Shafer, begin Spring practice on Tuesday, March 19. Shafer invites all Orange fans to come out and support their team during three Spring practice sessions. In addition to the annual Spring game on Saturday, April 20, fans are invited to watch the team practice sessions, which will include scrimmages, on Sunday, April 7 and Sunday, April 14.
All fans are invited to join 'Orangenation Rising,' a state of mind where passion, tradition and die-hard loyalty intersect, by renewing their season tickets before April 3 or reserving new 2013 season tickets with a $25 deposit. Fans can use the internet (SUAthletics.com), telephone (888-DOME-TIX), or visit the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). Season tickets start at just $99 each.
