SU Collects Two More BIG EAST Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse redshirt senior David Hamlin was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career, and sophomore Kevin Rice was picked to the conference's weekly honor roll for the second straight week on Monday, April 1.

Hamlin anchored an Orange defense that harassed Canisius into more turnovers (22) than it had shots (14) in a 17-5 victory against the Golden Griffins on March 29. No starting Canisius attackman had a point in the game and Hamlin was responsible for shutting out Sam Connors. In addition, Hamlin picked up a team-high four ground balls and set a career best with five caused turnovers.

Rice tallied a personal-best six points (three goals, three assists) versus Canisius to lead the Orange offense. Rice is averaging 4.3 points per game in his last three contests.

St. John's attackman Kevin Cernuto was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after recording four goals and three assists in the Red Storm's 12-10 win over top-ranked Notre Dame.

Reilly O'Connor (Georgetown), Jack Connelly (Providence), Greg Fitzmaurice (Providence) and Kris Alleyne (Rutgers) joined Rice on this week's honor roll.

Syracuse returns to action Saturday, April 6 with a road match against Princeton. Faceoff is slated for 5 p.m. on ESPNU.
