PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse senior midfielder Luke Cometti was selected as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career Monday, April 15. Cometti accounted for 40 percent of the team's goals last week in one-goal victories against Cornell and Rutgers.
Â
Cometti scored 10 of the team's 25 goals in the two games. Against Cornell, Cometti paced the Orange with a then career-high four goals (all in the second half) to help SU rally from an early 4-0 deficit for a 13-12 win.
Â
Three days later, Cometti surpassed his personal best with six goals against Rutgers. He also added an assist to finish with a career-high seven points in the contest. Four of Cometti's goals came in the fourth quarter as SU dug itself out of a 10-5 hole to defeat the Scarlet Knights, 12-11. Cometti's six goals are the most by a BIG EAST player in a conference game this season.
Â
Villanova's Thomas Croonquist earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday after winning 63 percent of his faceoffs and picking up 10 ground balls in a win over St. John's.
Â
Matt Miller (Notre Dame), Sean Rogers (Notre Dame), Brendon McGuire (Providence), Kevin Cernuto (St. John's) and John Kluh (Villanova) were selected to the conference's weekly honor roll.
Â
Syracuse returns to action Tuesday, April 16 when it faces Hobart at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised live locally on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
