SU Sweeps UConn to Advance to Round Two

TAMPA, Fla. – The fourth-seeded Syracuse tennis team (13-7) swept No. 13 seed Connecticut, 4-0, in the first round of the 2013 Women's Tennis BIG EAST Championship on Thursday afternoon at the USF Varsity Courts.
The Orange opened the contest with two close doubles victories to secure the point. Junior Aleah Marrow and freshman Alex Aiello finished first with an 8-6 triumph on court three against Jen Learmonth and Marie Gargiulo. Junior Maddie Kobelt and freshman Brittany Lashway added another 8-6 win from court one, moving the pair to 10-2 on the year from the top doubles position.
It only took three singles for SU to clinch the victory, as Syracuse registered the trio of wins in straight sets to take the match. Kobelt defeated Maxene Weinberg by a score of 6-0, 6-1 on court two, before sophomore Amanda Rodgers followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win from court one. Sophomore Jimena Wu concluded the competition beating Abby McKeon 6-2, 6-1.
Next up, SU will face the winner of the matchup between No. 5 DePaul and No. 12 Providence, scheduled for Friday, April 18 at noon. Earlier this season, the Orange swept the Friars 7-0. One of the closest Syracuse wins this season however, came against the Blue Demons, as SU pulled out a 4-3 win on the road in Chicago.
