Syracuse fans got their first look at the latest edition of the Orange football team and were entertained by a 27-7 victory posted by the Orange squad against the Blue team in the program's spring scrimmage.
For first-year coach Scott Shafer and his staff, it was a chance to evaluate the team in game-like situations following the completion of spring workouts.
"I'm really excited. It was a great turnout," said Shafer. "It was really great to see the people of Syracuse come out and support the team.
"As far as the game went, I thought there was some good effort out there. We have a lot of things to clean up but hopefully you saw some pictures of players you haven't seen run the ball much. I'm excited about those running backs. I look forward to seeing the game tape. I liked the effort of the kids."
Junior quarterback Terrel Hunt took all the snaps for the Orange squad and was impressive, completing 19-of-29 passes for 209 yards a two touchdown passes. Senior wide receiver Jerrod West had six catches for 82 yards and two scores.
The Orange squad also had success on the ground. Sophomore running back George Morris carried eight times for 68 yards and a touchdown and senior running back Jerome Smith had 11 runs for 34 yards.
"We have great competition," Shafer said. "We look forward to this last part of spring finishing up in the classroom and seeing these kids take it to the next level and take ownership of the team when the coaches can't be there to coach them. Hopefully they make big progress when we are not around looking at them."
The Orange squad jumped out to a 17-0 advantage. Hunt and West teamed on a 49-yard scoring pass and Morris added a 39-yard run to paydirt in the first quarter. Senior kicker Ross Krautman added both extra points to put the Orange up 14-0. Krautman's 40-yard field goal gave the Orange a 17-0 advantage at the intermission
The Blue team answered in the third quarter when senior quarterback John Kinder found junior wide receiver Macauley Hill on a 14-yard scoring strike. Sophomore kicker Ryan Norton's point after narrowed the score to 17-7 but Hunt and West joined forces again, this time on a 49-yard touchdown pass. Krautman converted the extra point and the Orange moved ahead 24-7.
The Orange squad closed the scoring with a 32-yard Krautman field goal to make the score 27-7.
Top defensive performances came from the Blue team's Lewellyn Coker, a senior linebacker, and junior safety Ritchy Desir, who had eight and seven tackles, respectively. The Orange defense produced two quarterback sacks -- by senior end Micah Robinson and sophomore tackle John Raymon.
