SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball (21-27) team split its midweek non-conference doubleheader with Cornell (21-27) at the SU Softball Stadium, picking up a 10-9 win in game one, but slipping in a 3-2 loss to the Big Red in game two.
Junior Shirley Daniels highlighted the afternoon with her 30th stolen base of the year in game one, which sets a new Syracuse single-season record that was previously set in 2010. She concluded the afternoon with two more steals to bring her season total to 32.
After making two appearances at shortshop in games one and two, senior Morgan Nandin recorded her 223rd career start, which moves her into first on the Orange all-time record list for both starts and games played. Nandin has currently started every single game of her career.
GAME 1 – Syracuse 10, Cornell 9
Junior Shirley Daniels opened the first game of the afternoon setting a new school record with her 30th stolen base of the season, following a walk in her first at bat. On batter later, senior Veronica Grant drove in Daniels to put Syracuse ahead, 1-0.
Meg Parker answered back with a three-run homer to center to pull the Big Red ahead by as many as three runs. Chirstina Villalon and Michiko McGivney then hit consecutive doubles to make it 5-1 heading into the bottom of the third inning.
Sophomore Mary Dombrowski led off the bottom of the inning with a home run left to get the Orange bats going. Junior Jasmine Watson followed with an RBI double to push Syracuse within two runs of the lead. Freshman Corinne Ozanne and fifth-year senior Gaby Torzilli crushed back-to-back home runs to secure a 7-5 advantage. Torzilli's blast is her first of the season and third of her career.
Syracuse couldn't shake Cornell though, as the Big Red added four more runs in the top of the fourth to take a control of the lead. Watson connected on a nother RBI double, but the Orange still trailed Cornell by one.
Following two scoreless innings, freshman Danielle Chitkowski knotted the game, 9-9, cranking a solo shot to left. Grant then stepped up and brought Daniels across home plate from first with a triple to center, sealing a 10-9 victory for the Orange.
GAME 2 – Syracuse 3, Cornell 2
Ozanne helped the Orange to an early 1-0 lead, breaking open a scoreless game with a long solo homer to right center in the bottom of the fourth inning. Countering, Jenny Edwards cranked a homer to right center in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 1-1.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, senior Morgan Nandin smacked a single straight up the middle to drive in a runner and give Syracuse a one-run advantage. Kristen Towne kept the Big Red in the game though, leading off with a home run to center that eventually forced the game into extra innings.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Edwards came to the plate and hit her second home run of the game, giving Cornell a 3-2 lead. Grant led off the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle, but the Orange couldn't continue the momentum, slipping in a 3-2 loss to the Big Red in game two.
Alyson Onyon earned the win for Cornell, surrendering two runs and striking out eight, while senior Stacy Kuwik took the loss, moving to 15-11 on the year. Kuwik allowed just three runs off of five hits, while pitching a complete game and fanning five Big Red batters.
SU will remain home this weekend, hosting conference foe Providence in a three-game series this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 4 at noon. Syracuse will close out the series with a single game on Sunday, May 5 at noon on Senior Day.
