SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball team (13-20, 1-5) will hit the road this weekend after its midweek contest against Cornell was rained out. The Orange will travel to Georgetown (15-25, 5-5) to take on the Hoyas in a three-game series, featuring a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13 and a game on Sunday April 14. The first pitch for both contests is set for noon.
Syracuse holds the advantage in the all-time series against Georgeotwn, while only having met five times prior this weekend. Syracuse claimed the most recent outing between the two teams with a 9-0 shutout April, 26 2012.
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW:
The Orange opened the slate last week splitting a doubleheader on the road at Binghamton. Four different SU batters cranked solo shots to lead Syracuse to a 14-10 victory in game one. Syracuse returned home to open the season at the SU Softball Stadium, hosting DePaul in a three-game series. Despite slipping in all three contests, freshman Corinne Ozanne highlighted the weekend with a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning to give the Orange a 5-2 lead.
20 AND COUNTING:
Junior Shirley Daniels is a base stealing machine this year. The rightfielder is leading the team with 20 stolen bases which ranks first in the BIG EAST and 25th nationally. Her mark this season also moves her into fourth on the SU single season list, tied with former Orange Stephanie Watts. Daniels has never been caught this year attempting to steal a base, also ranking her first in the conference in attempts.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS:
Georgetown will welcome Syracuse to Guy Mason Field after splitting a doubleheader at Connecticut on Wednesday. The Hoyas won the first game 7-3, but fell short in the second, slipping to 15-25 overall and 5-5 in the BIG EAST.
Among a solid group of Hoya hitters, Samantha Giovanniello is key member, having started all 40 games so far this season. Giovanniello is hitting at a .326 clip with a team-high 45 hits, which ranks fifth in the league. The freshman has also recorded eight doubles, two homeruns and 16 RBI. Junior Alexandria Anttila is another heavy hitter, posting a team-high .654 slugging percentage, with a team-best 10 solo shots, which is tied for second in the conference and ranked 79th nationally.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Next week the Orange will remain home, hosting a pair of BIG EAST opponents at the SU Softball Stadium. Syracuse will square off with Villanova on Wednesday, April 17 in a doubleheader slated for 2 p.m. before taking on Seton Hall in a three-game series. SU will face off against the Pirates in a doubleheader on Satuday, April 20 at noon and conclude the weekend with a game on Sunday, April 21 at noon.
