WASHINGTON -- The Syracuse men's and women's lacrosse squads enjoyed successful seasons in 2013 as both teams advanced to the Final Four. A member of each team was honored at the 13th annual Tewaaraton Award ceremony on Thursday, May 30. Senior JoJo Marasco and junior Alyssa Murray were both finalists for the award, which is given to the top male and female lacrosse players in the nation.
The ceremony was held at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Cornell's Rob Pannell took home the men's award, while Maryland's Katie Schwarzmann repeated as the women's winner.
Marasco earned USILA All-America First Team honors after recording a team-high 66 points. His 42 assists set the program single-season record for assists by a midfielder. Marasco was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team. In addition, he was picked to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team after recording four goals and four assists versus Denver and Duke at the Final Four.
"The past two days have been absolutely amazing," Marasco said of his time in the nation's capital. "I can't say enough about the Tewaaraton banquet. It's a great honor to be down here with so many great people. It's been an experience I'll never forget."
Murray led the Orange in scoring in 2013 with 104 points. She tallied 64 goals and a team-high 40 assists on her way to earning IWLCA first-team All-America honors for the second consecutive year. Murray was the BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year and was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Murray will enter her senior season ranked in the top five on SU's career points, goals and assists record lists.
"After watching the (women's) lacrosse championship and the men's games I was already pumped up and ready to get back on the field," Murray said. "Coming to this event and watching the highlights, it makes me want to get out there even more. It's not about the award. It's about getting back on the field. I was one of the younger (finalists). To have another year while all these others are ending their careers made me realize how lucky I am."
