GOLD RIVER, Calif. - Four Syracuse men's rowing crews raced in semifinal action on Saturday at the IRA National Championship Regatta on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. The No. 14 Orange varsity eight finished second in its semifinal, while the open four was fourth and the second varsity eight and varsity four both recorded sixth-place finishes.
Head coach Dave Reischman's V8 moves on to Sunday's third level final, scheduled to start at 2:55 p.m. ET. The 2V8 qualified for the petite final at 2:05 p.m. ET and the O4 will begin SU's Sunday races in its petite final at 12:12 p.m. ET.
After Drexel jumped out to an early lead in the fourth semifinal race for the V8s with the top three headed to the third level final and the bottom two headed to fourth level final, a burst from Syracuse in the second 500 meters moved the Orange into first by two seats. While the Dragons began to fade in the middle of the 2,000-meter course, George Washington surged and took the lead from SU. The Orange responded to keep within a few seats of the Colonials, eventually crossing the line in 5:59.602, three seats behind GW (5:58.435) and two seats up on Florida Tech (6:00.502). Drexel (6:03.948) and Gonzaga (6:10.798) finished fourth and fifth.
Syracuse will race in lane two in Sunday's third level final against Florida Tech, GW, Penn, Georgetown and Oregon State.
SU's 2V8, coming off a repechage victory on Friday afternoon to make the semifinals, finished sixth in a fast first semifinal on Saturday, sending the Orange to Sunday's petite final. Washington won the race in 5:50.272, followed by Princeton (5:52.396), Northeastern (5:52.645), Wisconsin (5:53.332), Penn (6:05.170) and the Orange (6:06.893).
In the open four second semifinal, Oregon State (6:42.915) edged out the Orange (6:44.261) for third place and the final spot in Sunday's grand final, sending SU to the petite final. Cal won the race in 6:32.618, followed by Northeastern (6:33.470). Penn (6:44.735) and Holy Cross (6:59.270) finished fifth and sixth behind the Beavers and Orange.
Syracuse's V4 qualified for the petite final with a sixth-place finish in the second semifinal. The Orange made it to Saturday's action with a victory in its repechage on Friday afternoon. In the semifinal, SU crossed in 6:47.198, behind Cal (6:25.617), Boston University (6:27.577), Cornell (6:33.130), Navy (6:34.267) and Colgate (6:43.258).
