- There are currently a total of 20 varsity sports at Maryland.
- Maryland teams have won a total of 39 national championships: 11 in women's lacrosse (1981, 1986, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2010); 10 in men's lacrosse (1936, 1937, 1939, 1940, 1955, 1956, 1959, 1967, 1973, 1975), eight in field hockey (1987, 1993, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011); four in competitive cheer (2006, 2007, 2008, 2010); three in men's soccer (1968, 2005, 2008); and one each in football (1953), men's basketball (2002) and women's basketball (2006).
- The nickname "Terrapins" was coined in 1932 by football coach and future university president Harry C. "Curley" Byrd, referring to the diamondback terrapins native to the Chesapeake Bay area. Prior to that, Maryland teams were known as "Old Liners" – referring to the state's nickname of "The Old Line State."
- Maryland's football and men's lacrosse teams play at Byrd Stadium (54,000), its basketball teams play at the Comcast Center (17,950), its soccer teams play Ludwig Field (7,000), and its field hockey and women's lacrosse teams play at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

Syracuse men's had a losing streak of five games against Maryland in men's basketball from 1972-1980, that all turned around in 2004. Fifth-seeded Syracuse beat fourth-seeded Maryland, 74-72, on March 20 in Denver to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Hakim Warrick led the Orangemen with 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Craig Forth had a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Gerry McNamara, coming off his record-setting 43-point game vs. BYU in the opening round, had 13 points and six assists.
ORANGE TOP TERPS IN DOME
On March 20, 2008 Syracuse once again beat Maryland in the post season. The Orange held off the Terps, 88-72, in the second round of the NIT at the Carrier Dome. This win improved SU's record against Maryland to 2-5. While Jonny Flynn scored a game-high 23 points, Paul Harris (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Arinze Onuaku (14 points, 14 rebounds) each had double-doubles for the Orange.

'CUSE BEAT TERPS FOR TITLE
Syracuse topped Maryland to win the 1995 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship. Playing on Maryland's home field, the Orange posted a 13-9 victory against the Terps at Byrd Stadium. Rob Kavovit had four goals and three assists in the contest and senior goalie Alex Rosier recorded 17 saves. The Orange's Roy Simmons Jr. became the first Division I head coach to win six NCAA championships and the 1995 title was his last. Simmons retired three years later having never again reached the title game. Check out the highlights below.
Maryland beat Syracuse 16-13 in the opening round of the 1979 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament. While ultimately a loss, the game was a watershed moment for the program as Syracuse reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. The Orange has made 32 more NCAA appearances since that first one and owns a record 11 NCAA championships. Current assistant coach Kevin Donahue had eight points (five goals, three assists) against the Terps that day. The 1979 squad also featured current head coach John Desko and director of operations Roy Simmons III. Donahue and Desko were co-captains.
SU field hockey recorded an important win in its history on Sept. 13, 2008 in College Park when the No. 7 Orange upset No. 1 Maryland, 2-1. Maggie Befort scored the winning goal in the 62nd minute and goalie Heather Hess made a brilliant save in the final seconds to secure the win. Martina Loncarica scored SU's first goal early in the second half. SU went on to make its first Final Four appearance, while the Terrapins won their sixth national title that season.
SU & UM MEET IN CHERRY BOWL
Syracuse and Maryland's football teams played in the Cherry Bowl at the Pontiac Silverdome on Dec. 21, 1985. The Terrapins defeated the Orangemen, 35-18. SU led 10-6 early on, but UM scored 22 straight points. Robert Drummond led SU with 93 yards rushing on 10 carries. Drummond and quarterback Don McPherson each had rushing touchdowns. Alvin Blount rushed for 132 yards for Maryland.
SU and UM have played a total of 34 times in football with SU holding the edge, 18-14-2. The last meeting was in 1994, a 21-16 Orangemen win at the Carrier Dome, running SU's winning streak against the Terps to four games.
Among the earlier SU wins against Maryland was a 29-0 shutout victory in 1959 - Syracuse's National Championship season.
ON THE DIAMOND
Syracuse is 1-2 all-time against Maryland in softball. The first meeting in the series was a 5-3 Terps win on March 17, 2001 at the Florida State Invitational, and the most recent was a 4-1 Maryland win on May 22, 2010 in the NCAA Regionals at College Park.

In between those losses was a 3-1 Syracuse win on Feb. 15, 2002 in the season opener at the Seminole Classic in Tallahassee, Fla. Senior Heather Brown threw a complete game three-hitter in which she did not allow an earned run and struck out 10 Terps. Christina Holowich went 3-for-4 at the plate, Rachel Park drove in a pair of runs and Kristen Collins was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored.
IN WOMEN'S LACROSSE
The most recent SU team to face the Terrapins was the women's lacrosse team in the 2013 National Semifinals on May 24. The No. 1 Terps defeated the No. 5 Orange, 11-10, in an exciting game. The Orange picked up its first win against Maryland in 2012 when the No. 6 Orange beat the No. 3 Terps, 10-9, in College Park. Gary Gait was an assistant coach for Maryland when it won seven straight national titles (1995-2001).
